To say goodbye to 2009, I’ll start a blog and allow 2010 to roll on in.
I’ll give you the run down for what happened during 2009 as I can remember.
School at UNT
I took Film History from 1945, Intro to RTVF Writing, Video Production, Film and Television Analysis, Film Styles, History of the Documentary, Advanced Video Production, and Advanced Screenwriting.
The latter part of the year has been significantly more productive in relation to school work. I learned things that I’ll take with me to my professional life, I was inspired by most of my professors, and I have creative products that I can show people and finally be proud of.
Out Of Order
UNT Freeze was the ‘first’ event that Out Of Order organized. With over 4,000 people invited online and over 200 people showing up it was unbelievably successful. This helped lay the foundation for future events.
Zombies VS Humans became a behemoth of collaboration in all aspects of the term and even on many administrative levels at UNT. 12 cameras, 4 survivors, over 100 zombies, a 20 person crew, weeks of planning, local business sponsorship, permission and access to film from 2 roofs and a clock tower, and now over 3,500 views.
Thought For Food
We went to our first competition in Austin, TX. We lost, but we learned and had a hell of a time.
We opened for Billy Washington in front of our largest audience yet! It may have been bias from our fans, but we were told that we were funnier than Mr. Washington afterwards.
‘An Improvised Christmas Carol’ was the best improv we have ever done. 1 hour and 15 minutes of pure hilarity.
Savage and the Big Beat
Max Brown and Ryan Cortez entered the Denton music scene with a mighty fist as the keyboardist-drummer duo Savage and the Big Beat.
As an avid fan of their work I worked with them to make their first music video for their song A Love Most Horrid.
It took three days of filming, $200 of props and costumes, and a small but dedicated crew. A budget!? I know, unheard of.
Underground DodgeBall League
We competed in the Rec Sports tournament again. And lost. Again. Two of our teams even got screwed over before they got to play by the Rec Sports office due to the office’s miscommunication.
The Spring saw a decline and it looked fairly grim for UDBL, but the Fall brought new hope and a sustained equilibrium of dodgeball advocates.
We actually have girls that play on a regular basis! Yay for co-ed-ness!
RTVF REAL Community
I’ll keep this short and sweet. During the end of the year evaluation of the work of an RA you get rated in a number of categories on a scale of 1-5. 1 = you’ll probably be fired soon, 2 = you’re lacking something, but can change, 3 = you’re doing your job exactly as you’re supposed to, 4 = you’re going above and beyond, 5 = … no one ever gets a 5 in a category. In relation to programming for the residents… I got a 5. I’m not sure if I truly deserved that, but they did tally it up to 20 programs in 15 weeks. Programs that averaged about 20 people each.
So it wasn’t that short, but it’s been so much fun and I’ve made countless connections because of it.
Back to me now…
So that’s what has happened of significance in my life. I will continue to update this blog with things I find interesting, things I write, and of course… cute pictures of puppies.
Regards,
Kevin Larz
